I don't know where to begin, so I'll just jump in: it's beautiful here. The people are lovely, and really laid back; the kind of place where they give pedestrians the right of way not because they have to, but because they want to. There are tiles and stone everywhere: on the buildings, on the sidewalks and the street. It occurs to me if it were raining here this week it would be awfully slick to walk around in.
There are surprises, everywhere and often. One was early on, as I wandered through the neighborhood adjacent to my hotel. Suddenly I happened upon an enormous park and fountain, with two teenagers in a deep embrace the only ones around.
It's like that - plain and everyday and then suddenly taking your breath away.
Even the canned fish come in multicolored cans with whimsical designs on them, and are arranged in a way that's pleasing to the eye.
The mass transit is dependable and frequent, and once again, attractive.
All in all, a wonderful first day here. I'll spend another full day and part of another before I move on to Oporto. There's much here, but there's also much waiting.
